The Lunar Mansions:
While of unknown definitive origin and slightly obscure to the Western world, the ancients of the Middle East and North Africa, developed a cyclical system to monitor the Moons journey through the sky in 28 “mansions” or quite literally, “abodes.” The cycle lasts approximately 27 days with the Moon traveling through all 28 Mansions in that time. The Hindus and Chinese likewise, had a similar system for monitoring the Moon. In Vedic astrology, they are called Nakshatras; with different names and bounds. It is important to note that phase does not equal mansion. Unlike the phases of the Moon, which relies on the Sun to increase and decrease in light, the Mansions are relative to the stars behind the Moon. Whilst the Moons phases DO matter in doing Mansion talismanic magic (I.e, a waxing phase for gain vs a waning phase for removing or destroying), it is not what the Mansions represent.
About the Third Mansion:
The Arabic Third Lunar Mansion is known as ‘Al-Thurraya’ meaning “The Little Ones” in reference to the Pleiades seven-star cluster; in which the mansion was located in antiquity. It is also sometimes known as Azoraye or Achaomazone. In the Greek mythos, the Pleiades were the seven divine sister-nymph companions of Artemis (a later personification/deification of the Moon) who committed suicide to escape Orion. Chief-God Zeus then enshrined the sisters into the night sky. In the Book of Job of the Bible, Chapter 38:31 says “…Canst thou restrain the sweet influences of the Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion?” This verse is part of Yahweh’s lengthy rebuttal to Job who has criticized and minimized the power of the Lord. This mention further affirms the goodness the Pleiades are said to bestow.
The Pleiades, according to Ptolemy, are of the natures of the Moon and of Mars. These talismans have a special Mars relationship that I will dive into, further on.
Of all 28 Lunar Mansions, Al-Thurraya is overwhelmingly agreed to be the most auspicious talismanic mansion. According to the medieval treatise Picatrix:
“..in this Mansion make images to sail safely on the sea and to return safely, and to firmly incarcerate captives, and to complete the works of alchemy, and all works done by fire, and to hunt in the country, and to cause love between man and wife.”
It also states that a talisman made in the 3rd Lunar Mansion is “for the acquisition of all good things.” In some traditions, Al-Thurraya (with the fixed star Procyon) occasionally is associated with a magic lamp due to its alleged tendency to fulfill wishes.
As mentioned, this mansion is great for bestowing luck upon its wearer. Unlike several of the other Lords of the mansions, the Lord of the 3rd mansion, Annuncia, is extremely benevolent and lovely. They often times make their appearance known serendipitously; i.e. finding money in a pinch, avoiding accidents, and right time-right place situations. With gentle attraction, Annuncia pulls desires closer to its wearer. For novice mages, these talismans are a great introduction to the spirits of the Moon.
About the Election:
To be a 3rd Lunar Mansion Talisman, the elected time of creation must have these essential features: the Moon, within the bounds of the mansion, conjunct the Midheaven or Ascendant, and unafflicted by squares or oppositions to Saturn and Mars. These talismans were ensouled and consecrated on 29 December 2025 at 13:07 in Southern Missouri; fulfilling the criteria. Though not necessary for a Mansion talisman, the election was during the Moons planetary day, Monday, and during her hour. This virtuous condition greatly strengthens the ability for the Moons celestial rays to penetrate the materia being worked with. Swiftly moving and gaining in light, the Moon gracefully rises upon the Ascendent in Taurus and applies several positive trines to the Sun, Mars, and Venus; all in Capricorn. It is worth mentioning that she is safe from Saturn in this election, as well; and therefore unafflicted.
While typically recognized as a malefic in most charts, Mars operates a little differently here. He is exalted in Capricorn; meaning he has great strength and vigor. The planet of action and passion is trine the Moon and lends a special ‘proactive’ approach when petitioning her spirits through these talismans, thus acting as a benefic in this election. William Lilly says this about the trine:
“The sextile and trine Aspects are arguments of love, unity and friendship; but the trine, is more forcible.. if the two significators are in sextile or trine, no doubt but peace may be easily concluded.”
Further, al-Razi, in the Picatrix:
“When the aspect of the Moon with the Sun is trine or sextile, it is favourable in all noble works such as seeking treasure, great riches, rule, honor, and victory.”
and
“[Trines of] the Moon toward Venus are compatible with all effects.”
The Dexter trine between Capricorn and Taurus is very powerful and therefore more favorable.
The chart ruler Venus is dignified by triplicity in Capricorn. Unfortunately she is combust, however, the extremely strong dignity of the Moon and the positive rays received and projected betwixt the two makes this less than ideal aspect, more tolerable. Venus here is conjunct the Sun and Mars to give the spirits of the Moon the vitality and drive to act.
Not only do we receive these incredibly material themes from Al-Thurayya, we receive great protection from the motherly instinct that only Luna can project.
